Leonel's Restaurant
About This Spot
Leonel’s Restaurant is one of those grounded, welcoming spots that gently draws you in with a quiet sense of familiarity. Nestled on Paseo Del Pueblo Sur in Taos, it offers a relaxed atmosphere where both locals and visitors feel at ease grabbing a seat and settling into a unhurried meal. There’s a comforting simplicity here—no bustling showmanship, just the steady hum of friendly voices and the subtle rhythm of dishes being crafted with care.
Inside, the pace is calm and unpretentious, inviting you to take your time over classic Mexican flavors that speak of home and tradition. The mood is more neighborhood nook than tourist hotspot—where the focus is on savoring food that’s honest and heartening. This is a place where breakfast might arrive piled high with fillings and gooey cheese, enlivened by chile that balances warmth and spice with a tender touch. Or where a tamale or birria taco finds its way to your plate like a quiet celebration of authentic, time-tested recipes.
The sense of authenticity stretches beyond flavors to the very fabric of the restaurant. Familiar local faces and returning visitors create a sense of belonging, sharing moments over hearty plates and mugs warmed by conversation. The aromas of fresh tortillas and slow-cooked chilies mingle with laughter and the clatter of morning breakfast rituals or a midday pause from the sunlit streets outside.
While the décor is unassuming and the ambiance modest, that honesty is part of Leonel’s charm—an unvarnished window into Taos through food, where every bite holds a story, every visit feels like a quiet rediscovery, and every shared meal connects you with the local rhythm.

We come here whenever we’re in Taos, the food never disappoints, breakfast burrito is my favorite, the huevos rancheros are delicious and the tamales plate, highly recommended this restaurant.

Had a navajo taco and family had some smothered burritos. Food was great. Green chili was perfect. Homemade type food. Mom & Pop shop and the restaurant was very clean. The prices were reasonable. Loved my experience.

We were pleased with our food which tasted great. I do wish they had free chips and salsa. The atmosphere was nothing to brag about. I felt the prices were very STEEP for this establishment. $18 for a simple hamburger. I know it’s a tourist destination but way overpriced.

The food here tastes very authentic. They have great tortillas. First Genuine tortilla I have eaten in New Mexico. The rice is great, fajita is flavorful l, and beans are great. The only downside is that they serve you with to go plates and silverware but we still had the opportunity to eat inside the restaurant.

This was our second visit to Leonel’s Tamales. Frankly, there is nothing special about the people, place or service…at all. But the food feels made with love. Both times we left wanting to come back next time we’re in town. It’s a good, simple place with good food.
